Have you ever felt like words can’t describe your experience? Have you ever been speechless, in shock, in awe, or totally overwhelmed by emotions that speaking wasn’t an option? I have. I think we all have. Sand tray therapy is a non-verbal exploration through sand, archetypes, and mind. It is not just for children or for play.  Sand tray therapy can be a deep and healing journey into the human heart and mind.

Some benefits of exploring sand tray therapy are:

  • touching nature by having your hands in the sand
  • exploring the mind body connection
  • experiencing the power of non-verbal healing
  • getting in touch with archetypes

“Often the hands will solve a mystery that the intellect has struggled with in vain.” -Carol G. Jung

Sand tray work can be the main focus of one’s therapy or it can be something to add on to deepen your work from time to time. Like any experience in therapy, the time and space is yours to use. Some clients seek out sand tray therapy and get their hands in the sand every session while others might use it sporadically or especially when something feels stuck or inaccessible in the verbal realm.

Anything can happen in the open tray. It’s a place where you get to be creative, follow your impulses, and learn about yourself. What images emerge in a given sand tray then offer us know ideas about ourself and our world.

Children tend to enjoy sand tray work or sand play but this modality is not only for kids. Adults again and again come to the sand tray to process, integrate, and heal.
